David Lewis Jenkins was born on 2 June 1886, the son of Captain David Jenkins, a master mariner, and his wife Anne. In September 1902, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Crickhowell branch. After completing his apprenticeship three years later he remained at the branch as a clerk until February 1906, when he moved to Abergavenny branch. He moved to Bute Docks branch in October 1908, and in the same year passed the final examination of the Institute of Bankers.
In June 1912 he moved to Petre, a sub-branch to Pontypridd, where he was authorised to sign official documents 'pro accountant'. In August 1913 he moved to Abergele branch as pro accountant, and in January 1914 was formally promoted to branch accountant there.
In September 1914 Jenkins joined the army, initially in The King's Liverpool Regiment. The following month he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. After spending time stationed at Ipswich, Northampton and Bedford, he sailed for the Dardanelles in July 1915. There, he served in the Suvla Bay landing, and in November 1915 was sent to hospital in Alexandria, suffering from frostbite. He later returned to active service.
Lieutenant David Lewis Jenkins of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers died on the Western Front on 26 September 1917. He was 31 years old.
