Cecil Norman Jones was born in Islington on 14 May 1893, the son of Charles Jones. In September 1910, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

In January 1916 Jones left his job as a clerk at the bank's Greenwich branch to join the army. By the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment. He died in France on 9 November 1917. He was 24 years old and left a widow, Constance.
