Alfred Ernest Ives was born on 2 February 1896, the son of Henry and Jane Ann Ives. He was educated at Emanuel School in Wandsworth, London. In February 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Ives left his job as a clerk at the bank's Gerrards Cross branch to join the army, serving initially in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and later in the London Regiment. Private Ives died in Belgium on 29 December 1916. He was 20 years old. Lance Corporal Abbot died on the Western Front on 20 September 1917.
Alfred Ives is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Gerrard's Cross branch.
