William Rawlinson Garside Holland was born in Sandbach, Cheshire, on 5 April 1893, the son of William Holland, a farmer. In June 1909, when Holland was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Hanley branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, then moved to Leeds branch as a clerk in May 1914. Outside work, Holland was an active worker in Moortown Church, Leeds, where he established and led a young men's bible class.

In January 1916 Holland left the bank to go on military service, initially as a Private in the West Yorkshire Regiment. Six months later he was commissioned into the same regiment. In June 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross.

Second Lieutenant William Rawlinson Garside Holland was killed in France on 18 September 1917. He was 24 years old.
