Wilfrid Stephen Hamlyn was born in Okehampton on 19 June 1892, the son of Tom Parker Hamlyn, a postmaster, and his wife Anna Maria. In September 1909, when he was 17 years old, he applied for a job with National Provincial Bank of England. His interviewer declared him to be a candidate 'distinctly above the average', and he started work as an apprentice at Southsea branch soon afterwards. After completing his apprenticeship three years later he stayed on as a clerk, and in August 1914 transferred to the bank's branch in Newcastle, Staffordshire.

During the First World War Hamlyn joined the army, and by the time of his death in 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 24 August 1917. He was 25 years old.
