Sydney James Hollies was born on 9 August 1893, the son of Joseph Hollies and his wife Anne. He was educated at Haberdashers Askes’s School, London.
In January 1911, when he was 17 years old, Hollies went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. Outside work he was a territorial soldier, and at the outbreak of the First World War Hollies was mobilised with his battalion, leaving his job at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to go on active service. Lance Corporal Sydney James Hollies of the Middlesex Duke of Cambridge's Hussars died in Palestine on 27 October 1917. He was 24 years old.
Sydney Hollies is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
