Sydney Hall was born in London on 2 October 1890, the son of Richard and Harriet Venables Hall. In January 1911, when he was 20 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

In November 1915 Hall left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army, initially as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. In May 1917 he was commissioned into the Manchester Regiment. He was posted to France the following month, but shortly after arriving there he was shot in the back and sent back to England to convalesce.

Hall subsequently transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force). He trained at Gatesbury, and after obtaining his wings returned to France in October 1918. Second Lieutenant Hall was killed on 18 October 1918, when his plane was brought down during his first enemy engagement. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Ellen, whom he had married in 1915.
