John William Ewart Hall was born on 3 February 1899, the only child of John Thomas Hall, a school teacher, and his wife Annie Clara. In February 1916, on his 17th birthday, Hall went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.
In February 1917 Hall left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Chancery Lane branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Essex Regiment. He died on 4 September 1918 of wounds received in action in France. He was 19 years old.
