John Henry Hewett was born on 21 October 1894, the son of a Congregational Church minister. He was educated at Eastbourne Municipal Secondary School. After leaving school, Hewett worked briefly for the British General Insurance Co. In December 1912, when he was 18 years old, he started an apprenticeship with National Provincial Bank of England at its Barnstaple branch.
During the First World War Hewett left the bank to join the army, becoming a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He was killed in action in France on 31 March 1918. He was 23 years old.
