James Shepherd A Hoyle was born in Bacup on 22 March 1896, the son of Frank Hoyle, a hatter and outfitter, and his wife Martha. In April 1912 he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.

 

In December 1915 Hoyle left his job at the bank's Glossop branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 23 October 1917. He was 21 years old.
