Herbert Howarth was born on 31 March 1897, the only child of Robert and Sarah Howarth. In May 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.
In September 1914 Howarth left his job in the bank's Bolton branch to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Lance Corporal in The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 30 November 1917. He was 20 years old.
