Harold Ingersoll Hayes was born on 20 February 1895. In April 1913, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In December 1914 Hayes left his job as a clerk at the bank's Midhurst branch to join the army. By 1916 he was a Corporal in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action at Loos on 30 June 1916. He was 21 years old.
Harold Hayes is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Godalming branch.
