Geoffrey Charles Harryman was born on 22 April 1892, the son of Charles Harryman, a brewery manager, and his wife Mary. The family lived in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

In June 1910, when Harryman was 18 years old, he applied for an apprenticeship in National Provincial Bank of England. His examiner found him to be a good candidate, 'distinctly above the average', and he was given a post at Stamford branch. He completed his three-year apprenticeship in July 1913, and stayed on at Stamford as a clerk. In December 1914 he was transferred to Newcastle upon Tyne branch.

During the First World War Harryman joined the army. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment. He died in France of wounds received in action on 8 August 1916. He was 24 years old.
