Frederick Haswell was born on 14 June 1895, the son of Robert and Jessie Haswell. He worked for National Provincial Bank of England at its Manchester branch.
At the beginning of the First World War Haswell left the bank to go on military service and was commissioned into the East Yorkshire Regiment in September 1914. Second Lieutenant Frederick Haswell was shot in the head and killed instantly in action near Ypres on 23 April 1915. He was 19 years old. His older brother Gordon, a schoolteacher, was killed on the Somme in 1916.
