Frederic Gordon Hindle was born in Doncaster on 19 April 1885, the son of James Edward Hindle, a bank worker, and his wife Martha. He was educated at Giggleswick School, Settle. In September 1901, when he was 16 years old, Hindle followed his father into banking, albeit not with the same employer. He started work at Knaresborough & Claro Bank. In 1903 that bank was acquired by the much larger National Provincial Bank of England, and Hindle became a clerk at its Knaresborough branch.

In February 1905 Hindle moved to Leeds branch; then in April 1911 to Scunthorpe; in February 1912 to Sunderland; and in August 1913 to Gateshead. In 1916, when Hindle was already away on military service, his manager there recommended him for promotion to a branch cashiership or accountancy post.

Hindle joined the army in January 1916, serving initially as a Private, and later as a Corporal, in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 1 January 1917. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Hilda Mary.
