Francis Hornby

Francis Hornby was born on 25 January 1892, the son of William Hornby, a wine and spirit merchant, and his wife Hannah. The family lived in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and Hornby was educated at Storrey's College, Nottingham.

In 1910 Hornby went to work for United Counties Bank. Three years later, in October 1913, he took a job with National Provincial Bank of England as a clerk in its Leicester branch. In 1914 his manager there described him as 'a painstaking and hardworking clerk, desirous of doing well.'

Early in the First World War Hornby left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Serjeant in the Leicester Regiment. He was severely injured in the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt in October 1915, and died of his wounds on 12 November 1915. He was 23 years old.
