Ernest Stewart Humpleby was born on 10 June 1886, the son of Henry Humpleby and his wife Emily. In January 1905, when he was 18 years old, Humpleby went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Humpleby became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In January 1917 Humpleby left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Kensington (OP) branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the London Regiment. He was killed in action on 30 October 1917. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Mary Evelyn, whom he had married in September 1914.
Ernest Humpleby is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Kensington Royal Gardens branch.
