Eric John Harding was born in Wantage on 29 July 1893, the son of Nathaniel Arthur Harding, a bank worker, and his wife Annie. In January 1911, when he was 17 years old, Harding went to work for his father's bank, London County & Westminster Bank.
During the First World War Harding left his job as a clerk at the bank's St Leonards branch to join the army. Company Serjeant Major Eric John Harding of the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers was killed in action on 19 July 1916, not long before his 23rd birthday.
