David Geoffrey Howells was born on 5 June 1897, the son of David James Howells and his wife Agnes Lewis Howells. In November 1914 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

In April 1916 Howells left his job at the bank's Ambleside branch to join the army, and in July that year he was commissioned. Second Lieutenant David Geoffrey Howells of the Royal Fusiliers died on 1 December 1918. He was 21 years old.
