Arthur Horace Harold Snelson Hassall was born in Cheshire in 1894. From about 1911 he worked for Parr's Bank.

In November 1914 Hassall left his job at the bank's Congleton branch to join the army, serving initially in the Cheshire Yeomanry and later in the Machine Gun Corps. Lance Corporal Hassall died in Egypt on 15 October 1918. He was 23 years old.
