William Emil Greenhalgh was born on 1 January 1896, the son of James Greenhalgh and his wife Olga Magdelena. In June 1914 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

In January 1916 Greenhalgh left his job at the bank's Manchester head office to go on military service, becoming a Private in The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He died of wounds on the Somme on 5 October 1918. He was 22 years old.
