Wilfred St Martin Gibbon was born on 4 July 1889, the son of the Reverend HH Gibbon. In July 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Hay branch. When he completed his apprenticeship three years later, he moved to Cardiff branch as a clerk.
During the First World War Gibbon joined the army, and by 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the 89th Punjab Regiment. He died of enteric fever in India on 24 April 1918. He was 29 years old.
