Samuel Goodwin was born in Ayr in 1897, the son of John McCall Goodwin, a ship store merchant, and his wife Margaret Lawson McMurtie Goodwin. In December 1913 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Ayr branch.
During the First World War Goodwin left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 1 October 1918. He was 21 years old.
Samuel Goodwin is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
