Ronald Stuart Gunn was born in Edinburgh on 11 May 1890, the younger son of John Leith Gunn, a commercial traveller, and his wife Mary. In May 1906, a couple of weeks after his 16th birthday, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh head office. In July 1908 he moved to Edinburgh Canonmills branch. He became a clerk there in June 1909, and teller the following year.

 

During the First World War Gunn left the bank to go on military service. Lance Corporal Ronald Stuart Gunn of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders was killed in action in France on 25 September 1915. He was 25 years old.
