Montague Charles Gray was born in Clapton, London, on 26 July 1882, the son of Courtenay Montague Gray and his wife Jane Lepine Gray. In March 1900, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Gray became an employee of the newly enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In May 1917 Gray left his job as a clerk at the bank's Harrow Station Road branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Machine Gun Corps. He died on 23 March 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 35 years old and left a widow, Annie, whom he had married in 1912.
