Lewis Alexander Grant was born on 13 May 1897, the son of John Forbes Grant, a tailor and clothier, and his wife Jessie. In May 1913, two days after his 16th birthday, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Peterhead branch.

 

During the First World War Grant left the bank to join the army. Serjeant Lewis Alexander Grant of the Gordon Highlanders died on 2 August 1917 of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 20 years old.

 

Lewis Grant is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
