Leslie Stephen Gander was born on 23 July 1894, the son of Philip Gander and his wife Jane Ada. In June 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

In January 1915 Gander left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Chiswick branch to join the army. By 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders. He died in France on 5 June 1918. He was 23 years old.
