Ian Stuart Gunnis was born on 3 August 1891 at Pusey Place, Faringdon, Berkshire, the son of Major GS Gunnis and his wife. In March 1914 Gunnis went to work for London County & Westminster Bank (Paris), having previously worked for the merchant bank Brown Shipley & Co between 1910 and 1913.

In September 1916 Gunnis left the bank to go on military service in the British army. By the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. He died in Belgium on 4 July 1917. He was 25 years old.
