Hugh Stevenson Grand was born in Norwich on 10 January 1893, the son of Richard Grand, a brewery manager, and his wife Lila Watling Grand. In June 1909, when Grand was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Lowestoft branch. He completed his apprenticeship there three years later, and stayed on as a clerk.
During the First World War Grand joined the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Suffolk Regiment, and had been mentioned in despatches. He died in France on 28 April 1917. He was 24 years old.
