Harold Gardner was born on 17 February 1899, the son of Thomas Gardner, an inspector of nuisances, and his wife. He was educated at Ghyll Bank School, Whitehaven. In August 1915 he went to work for Parr's Bank as an apprentice at its Whitehaven branch.
In February 1917 Gardner left his job at the bank to go on military service. He served for a time as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, but later transferred to the Cheshire Regiment. Private Harold Gardner was killed in action in Belgium on 10 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
