Frederick Greer

Bank: Ulster Bank

Place of work: Mountpottinger branch

Died: 9 October 1916

Frederick William Martin Greer was born in Doncaster in 1890, the son of Thomas and Mary Greer. Thomas died while Frederick was still a boy, and sometime after 1900 Mary took the family back to live in her native Ireland, settling in Belfast.

By 1914 Greer was working for Ulster Bank, but in October that year he left his job at the bank's Mountpottinger branch to join the army. He went to France with the Royal Irish Rifles in October 1915, moving north to Belgium in the summer of 1916. Rifleman Greer was killed in action in Belgium on 9 October 1916. He was 25 years old.

Frederick Greer is commemorated on two memorials at Ulster Bank’s Belfast head office: its roll of honour for staff who served in the First World War and its memorial for those who fell.
