Charles George Goff, known as 'Charlie', was born in London in 1888, the son of Frederick Goff, a tailor's cutter, and his wife Marion. In April 1914 Goff left his job as a wine merchant's assistant to become a messenger for London County & Westminster Bank at its London head office.
In June 1916 Goff left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Lance Corporal in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action in France on 20 September 1917. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Rose, whom he had married in 1913.
