William Stewart Fraser was born in Kirkintilloch in 1895, the son of James and Margaret Fraser. In August 1912, when he was 17, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkintilloch branch. In December 1914 he moved to Glasgow Hope Street branch.

 

During the First World War Fraser joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He died of wounds received in action in Belgium on 26 February 1917. He was 22 years old.

 

William Fraser is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
