William Forrest was born on 25 May 1893. In May 1910, a few days before his 17th birthday, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow St George's Cross branch. He became a clerk there in May 1913.
During the First World War Forrest joined the army, serving as a Private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 20 May 1917, just before his 24th birthday.
William Forrest is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
