Montague Smith Furness was born in Ilford, Essex, on 24 April 1893, the son of William Montague Furness and his wife Mary Ann. In about 1911 he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its London Lincoln's Inn branch. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.
During the First World War Furness left the bank to join the army, and in November 1916 he was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery. Second Lieutenant Montague Smith Furness was killed in action in Belgium on 29 June 1917. He was 24 years old.
Montague Furness is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
