Maurice Firmin

Maurice Harold Cuffe Firmin was born on 22 September 1887 in Richmond, London, the son of Nicholas Firmin and his wife Amy. He was educated at St Paul's School, London.

After leaving school Firmin went to work for J D Morgan & Co, but in August 1908 he moved to London & Westminster Bank. The following year London & Westminster Bank merged with London & County Bank and Firmin became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. In June 1912 his younger brother John also came to work for the bank. Like his brother, Firmin was a keen sportsman, and represented the bank at football and lawn tennis.

In August 1914 Firmin left his job at the bank's London head office to join the army, initially in the Royal Fusiliers. Four months later he was commissioned into The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He was drafted to France in August 1915, and while serving there was twice wounded.

Lieutenant Firmin was killed in action near Arras on 26 February 1916. He was 28 years old. His younger brother John, also of the bank, had been killed in the Dardanelles six months earlier.
