John Cunningham Knight Fyall was born in Edinburgh on 16 April 1896, the fifth son of Thomas Lang Fyall, an iron merchant, and his wife Annie. In July 1912, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice in its head office discount office. He transferred to Edinburgh Gorgie branch in February 1914.

During the First World War Fyall left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action in Gaza, Palestine on 19 April 1917, three days after his 21st birthday.

John Fyall is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
