John Stuart Frost was born in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, on 2 May 1887, the son of John Thomas Frost, a Baptist minister, and his wife Annie. In April 1903, shortly before his 16th birthday, he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Bank.
During the First World War Frost left his job at the bank's Nottingham branch to join the navy, serving as an Assistant Paymaster on board HMS Russell. He died on 27 April 1916 when the Russell was sunk by a mine off Malta. He was 28 years old.
