John Ernest Fairclough was born on 6 March 1893, the son of John and Mary Fairclough. From about 1909 he worked for Parr's Bank.

During the First World War Fairclough left his job at the bank's St Helens branch to join the army, and by 1916 he was a Serjeant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He died on 18 October 1916 of wounds received in action in France. He was 23 years old.
