Vivian James Elisha was born on 9 January 1878. In December 1898, when he was 20 years old, Elisha left his post with EF Kelaart, a London stock broker, and went to work for London & Westminster Bank as a teller at its London head office. The following February he was appointed teller at London Balham Hill branch. In December 1902 he returned to head office as a 4th class crediting clerk.

In 1909 London & Westminster Bank merged with London & County Bank, and Elisha became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. In March 1912 he was promoted to 3rd class clerk at head office. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club, and secretary of its orchestral society.

Outside work Elisha was a territorial soldier, a Trooper in the County of London Yeomanry. Early in the First World War he left the bank to go on active service with his battalion. He was killed in action at Suvla Bay on 23 August 1915. He was 37 years old.
