Lewis Arthur Evans was born on 20 April 1884, the son of William Evans, an innkeeper, and his wife. In August 1900, when he was 16 years old, Evans went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Cardiff branch. He remained there after the completion of his three-year apprenticeship, and in April 1907 moved to Landport branch as a clerk. He moved to London office in March 1908, and to Leicester branch in March 1910.
During the First World War Evans joined the army, serving as a Private in the Leicester Regiment. He was killed in France on 21 June 1918. He was 34 years old.
