John Streeter Ebbutt was born in Croydon on 10 November 1886, the son of Thomas Henry Ebbutt and his wife Anne. He was educated at Whitgift School, Croydon.
Ebbutt worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its South Norwood branch. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.
In September 1914 Ebbutt left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). He served throughout the First World War, but died of pneumonia in India on 2 October 1919. He was 32 years old.
John Ebbutt is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office and on another held at NatWest Group Archives.
