Edwin William Ede was born in Brockley, London, on 8 December 1897, the son of Cecil Alfred Ede and his wife Annie Louisa. In June 1915 he went to work for The National Bank.
During the First World War Ede left his job in the bank's London Belgravia branch to join the army. By 1918 he was a Captain in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 30 August 1918. He was 20 years old.
Edwin Ede is commemorated on a bank war memorial at the Royal Bank of Scotland London Cavendish Square branch.
