David Jones Edwards was born in Wales on 17 January 1898, the son of a policeman. He was educated at Bala County School, and was a fluent Welsh speaker. On 15 April 1914 he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Newcastle Emlyn branch.
During the First World War Edwards joined the army, serving as a Private in the Tank Corps. He was killed in action in Belgium on 25 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
