Bernard Roy Edgar was born on 23 March 1897, the son of Albert Edward Edgar, a commercial traveller, and his wife Rosina. He was educated at Bristol Grammar School.
In November 1913, when Edgar was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Bristol branch. His manager there described him to head office as a 'quick, intelligent youth.'
By September 1916 Edgar was on military service as a cadet at Bisley Camp. He was later commissioned into the Machine Gun Corps. Second Lieutenant Bernard Roy Edgar was killed in action in France on 31 July 1917. He was 20 years old.
