William Dunkerley was born in Flixton on 5 July 1884. In February 1900, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior. He was promoted to a clerkship in 1904.

In March 1916 Dunkerley left his job at the bank's head office in Manchester to join the army, becoming a Private in the Lancashire Fusiliers, and later the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He died of wounds in France on 4 December 1917. He was 33 years old.
