Wilfred James Dashwood was born on 3 December 1883, the fourth son of Sir George and Lady Mary Dashwood of Kirtlington Park, Oxford. He was educated at Sedburgh and Rugby schools. He worked at Lloyds Bank in Belgrave Road, London until April 1906, when he moved to Child & Co.

In August 1914 Dashwood left his job as a ledger keeper at the bank to go on military service. He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers until his battalion was disbanded. He was then commissioned into the Grenadier Guards and returned to England for training. Having returned to France, he was wounded on 31 July 1917 during the attack on Passchendaele Ridge. He died of his wounds on 2 August 1917. He was 33 years old.
