Thomas Danes was born on 13 December 1877, the son of Thomas Danes and his wife Ellen. In January 1896, when he was 18 years old, Danes went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Danes became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In September 1917 Danes left his job as a clerk at the bank's Brentwood branch to go on military service. Second Lieutenant Thomas Danes of the Army Service Corps died of pneumonia in Bristol on 13 November 1918, two days after the signing of the Armistice. He was 40 years old and left a widow, Beatrice, and two children.
Thomas Danes is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Brentwood branch.

From the Current NatWest staff at Brentwood we remember those including Second Lieutenant Barry Danes who left his job as a clerk at this branch to fight and earn our freedom that we enjoy today, let it be known that we are so very grateful and shall never forget the sacrifice you made.
