Joseph Henry Freeman Deane was born in Ashton-upon-Mersey, Cheshire, in 1898, the son of Henry Thomas Dean, a grocer, and his wife Alice Gertrude (née Freeman). He grew up in Blackpool, and after leaving school went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank.
In January 1917 Deane left his job at the bank's Fleetwood branch to go on military service. Private Joseph Henry Freeman of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action on the Western Front on 9 October 1917. He was 19 years old.
Joseph Deane is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
