Gordon Douglas was born in Montrose in 1897, the son of William Douglas, a coachman, and his wife Margaret. In March 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Montrose branch.

 

During the First World War Douglas left the bank to join the army. Lance Corporal Gordon Douglas of the Highland Light Infantry was killed in action in France on 28 April 1917. He was 20 years old.

 

Gordon Douglas is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
